The World On My Mind

Description

This I created as a sort of writing-on-the-wall picture.

The transparency of the figure in the portrait reminds us that the individual is slowly fading away, while its seemingly frayed edges show that society and humanity are slowly coming apart altogether. Then there is the image of NYC representing our collective self-interest and pride in our own accomplishments, which weigh more heavily on our minds than the welfare of our world as a whole - not just our species but everything that exists to create life and sustain nature, including evolution.

Finally, the mask represents the metaphorical mask that we wear to protect ourselves from the troubles of the world. Our masks allow us to commit morally repugnant atrocities to perpetuate the endless cycle of evil that mankind so very loves. Behind the figure in the portrait lies the wall we build to protect ourselves from history, further shielding us from realizing that we are a decaying species not because of our own fallacies but because of our repeated and intentional failure to recognize them.

In believing that recognizing failure will cause it to flourish, we are in fact causing it to flourish by failing to learn from our mistakes. As such, we as a society are failing to see the writing on the wall and ignoring those among us that have already seen it.

Of course, all of this begs the question: of all the people driven mad and shut up in asylums, how many of them are the result of the curiosity that resulted in the opening of Pandora's Box? Another question one might ask is whether Pandora's Box is actually the all-consuming desire to know everything.

Personally, I'm of the mind that I don't have to know everything. I just need something to believe in. Whatever it is I'm supposed to, I'm still looking for it. Are you?
